'Altos de la Hoya'
Monastrell & Garnacha, Murcia, Spain
An animalistic, yet JUICY Spanish red made from the philosophy, “wine is geography, it is process and it is passion”. Nearly a century ago, Bodegas Olivares was born when Pascual Olivares Fernandez began producing small quantities of his beloved grape monastrell. FUN FACT! With steady wind, sandy/poor soils and a dry climate, there is little disease pressure on the vines, meaning there was never any need to adopt chemical fertilizers or pesticides! Made exclusively from old, un-grafted vines, this blend is dominated by gamey, spiced monastrell (aka mourvèdre 90%), with just a dash of finely-fruited garnacha (10%). Ruby, ruby, ruby, RIPE strawberry meets blended pomegranate tannins, sticky black plums falling from the tree, antique animal pelts, soil-sodden in minerals & apothecary spices. A stew craving wine if we ever did see one, be it beef tendon, potato and leek, or lamb.
