Tom Lubbe and his wife Nathalie along with New Zealand oenologist Sam Harrop began Matassa in 2002. Today their 20 hectares at the foot of the Pyrenees see biodynamic and organic practices, with as little intervention as possible in the cellar. FUN FACT! ‘Matassa’ is an old Catalan word that describes the thicket of a forest. Part of the iconic and experimental Brutal line, the old vine macabeu is handpicked from slate-rich soil and macerated on skins for four weeks to pull spell-binding texture. Forsythia, fresh apricot, bewitching (we should know) coastal minerality, citrus grove, grapefruit pulp & a bitter herb tannin structure. As one importer wrote, “In one sip there is the world”, enjoy while spinning a globe round n’ round, where it stops, you shall go!
