‘Dzsúz’
Kékfrankos & Cabernet Franc, Balaton, Hungary
A salty n’ sweet Hungarian red blend here for the first time! Winemaker Bence Szilágyi makes zero-zero wines in the western Hungarian village of Barnag, near Lake Balaton. Buying land in the area is near impossible (due to tourism trends), and so Bence works with five limestone-stuffed hectares, half being rentals he farms in a no-till fashion, the other half being purchased grapes from local negociant farmers he considers himself lucky to work with. ‘Dzsús’ is a blend of early harvest, aromatic, fruity kékfrankos (70%, aka blaufränkisch) from a cooler plot in the Monoszló area, and herbaceous, earthy cabernet franc (30%) from a warmer vineyard in Aszófő. Poprocks, crayon sharpener, a lactic yoghurty POW, sweet pumpkin meets watermelon rind, salty cave overrun by volcanic activity, like a mineral bitterness & a fine pepper trail. Drink alongside Vilda’s Caesaroni.
