‘Weiss’ 2016
Grüner Veltliner, Weissburgunder, Gewürtztraminer & Welschriesling, Burgenland, Austria
A zero-zero highlight from the last eight years, this aged white blend is rich, supple and READY for drinking. The world famous Gut Oggau is all about unfaltering biodynamics, land expression and elegance. Traversing all the way from 2016 and quite frankly tasting phenomenal, the ‘Weiss’ is a blend of regional treasures including citric grüner veltliner, blossomy, rich weissburgunder (aka pinot blanc), gewürtztraminer & welschriesling. These grapes are normally used to make the Theodora, Timotheus, Emmeram and Mechthild, however due to a particularly hard vintage where spring frosts and summer hail hit the vines, less than 40% of the harvest remained and hard decisions had to be made, combining all cuvées into one stunning, rare wine. FUN FACT! The domaine-held back some of this 2016 bottling to release it after SEVEN years, which is the full holistic cycle as proposed by biodynamics. One third of the grapes ferment on skins for three weeks while the rest are directly pressed, then fermented together and left for 11 months with no batonnage (aka no stirring of the lees). A snowflake disappearing on your tongue, prickly effervescent tactility, donut glaze, tender thyme, raw brazil nut, salt shaker, luxuriant citrus & aromatic apple. Enjoy with lobster stir fried rice.
