‘Tattouine’
Grenache Gris & Grenache Noir, Côtes Catalan, France
An ethereal and texturally compelling rare jewel from a zero-zero king of the desert. Originally from South Africa, Tom Lubbe and his wife Nathalie along with New Zealand oenologist Sam Harrop began Matassa in 2002. Today their 20 hectares at the foot of the Pyrenees see biodynamic and organic practices, and as little intervention as possible, and scream their truth at you in every humble sip. FUN FACTS! ‘Matassa’ is an old Catalan word that describes the thicket of a forest! And ‘Tattouine’ is a reference to the fictional planet "Tatooine" from the Star Wars universe! A blend of 90-year-old, goblet-trained citric, aromatic and mineral grenache gris (90%) and peppery-spiced grenache noir (10%). Formerly titled ‘Romanissa Casot’ for those that collect Matassa cuvées like rare Pokémon cards, ‘Tattouine’ is a co-maceration of whole clusters for three weeks, followed by gentle pressing, and five months in wood casks relaxing. Bergamot, underripe peach, green tomato, sour pomegranate jewels meet huckleberry fruit roll-up, pink oyster mushrooms & peppery arugula leave a titillating tingle. Pray to the gods of spring and hold onto this fantastical bottle to drink under the cherry blossoms.
