A spiced, mushroom-bearing and meaty zero-zero Hungarian red. Please join us in welcoming GWI’s newest producer, Vaskapu! After purchasing Vaskapu Kastély (Iron Gate Castle) in the area of Mohács, wife and husband Ibolya and Géza Galán transitioned the 2.5 hectare plot into full biodynamics, complete with no-tilling, and zero intervention in the cellar. CUTE FACT! Géza has shared that he wants his wines to impart a sense of “genius loci”, translating to the, “spirit of a place”, and a unique way to think about reflecting terroir. Alongside factors like soil, climate, terrain and farming practices, imagine an expression of local culture and disposition of the general populace, in this case meaning the warmth of celebration and a thriving community. From kadarka vines planted in the early 1990’s, the cuvée was fermented with a mix of whole cluster (40%), and hand-destemmed whole berries (30%), with the remaining foot stomped to create juice to cover and protect the ferment. Dried and fresh mushrooms galore, smoked paprika tin, bear cave, fallen forest wood, pungent pennies & meaty, spiced tannins. Pour alongside sanding down a solid wood 1970’s dresser, your new hobby of revitalizing and selling vintage furniture is within reach!
