'Kert' Red
Blaufrankisch, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Kadarka & Hárslevelu, Pécs, Hungary
A firm and bodacious zero-zero Hungarian field blend, available in Ontario for the very first time! From the historically grape-abundant region of Pécs in Southern Hungary, wife and husband team Ibolya and Géza Galán’s 2.5 hectares of no-till, biodynamic vines live an enviable life. Their parcel rests in a sub-Mediterranean climate, with cool Danube winds, shielding from the nearby Mecsek Mountain, and volcanic, loess, clay and forest loam soils which help spring the grapes to life. “Kert”, aka “garden” is a field blend of biodynamically tended spiced and tannic blaufrankisch (60%), whole-bunch fermented for 10 days, with hand de-stemmed herbaceous cab sauv and red stone-fruity merlot, and a pinch of direct pressed spiced kadarka and grüner veltliner-esque hárslevelu for an aromatic pick-me-up. #phew! Aged for eight months in a combination of old oak barrels and fibreglass and left unfined, unfiltered and without S02. Old dresser drawers - a mix of human, wood and scented drawer liners, wet garden soil (we swear we wrote this before we knew that kert means garden!), hibiscus, concentrated blueberry meets pomegranate powder, pie spices & tide pool teeming with starfish kinda otherworldly minerality. Pour alongside perusing Harold Mcgee’s Nose Dive.
